My Map and Table of Completed States

As of June 2017, I have been to at least 1,797 out of 3,142 U.S. counties or equivalents (57%). Some people have actually been to all 3,142!  For more about county collecting, visit the Extra Miler Club.

County Map
On the map above, the darkness of color indicates when the first visit to a county occurred (prior to 1990, 1991-2000, 2001-2010, 2011-present). Red counties are from the current year. Counties I'm unsure about are in gray. Detailed regional maps are available below.

My County Collecting Rules

There are no official county collecting rules. Below are the rules I follow. Others may have more or less stringent rules.

  1. My collection begins in 1983. I have few memories before then, and there are too many unknowns to piece together my routes.
  2. To count the county, I simply need to cross the boundary on land or water.
  3. I do not include airport connections; I have to leave the airport grounds to count the county.
To see my wife's county map, follow this link (she has around 350 counties).

Regional Maps

These maps not only show what counties I've visited, but the rank level of each county. Darker colors indicate better rank (lower number).

  4.  A county I have been in, but not spent a significant amount of time exploring. In many cases, I've passed through such counties while on an interstate highway.
  3.  A county where I left the Interstate, perhaps visiting several towns or attractions or spending the night.
  2.  A county where I traveled extensively, spent large amounts of time, or studied in depth.  In other words, a county where I probably don't need a map.
  1.  A county I lived in (5 counties).

A state name in red type indicates that I have been to all counties in that state, while one in italics indicates a visit to the capiTOL.

Interstate Table

When driving on I-15 for the first time in 2012, I surmised that I had driven on at least a segment of most one and two digit Interstates. So I did some research and came up with the following table:

Interstates that I've driven on: 10, 12, 15, 20, 22, 24, 25*, 27*, 29, 30, 35, 37, 39, 40, 43, 44*, 49 (north)**, 55, 57, 59,
64, 66, 68*, 69, 70*, 71*, 72, 74, 75, 76*(west), 76 (east), 77, 78*, 79*, 80, 81, 83, 84 (east)**, 85**,
86*, 87, 88 (west), 88 (east)**, 89, 90, 91, 93, 94 (west)*, 94 (MI), 95, 96, 99

Interstates that I've ridden on, but not driven: 5, 16, 45, 97*

Interstates that I've never been on: 2, 4, 8, 17, 19, 73, 82, 84 (west), H1, H2, H3

*entire length **driven part; ridden entire length
